Lace to Dye for, and ROW80

Last week, one of my goals was to dye the lace for my daughter’s prom dress, which we’re making. It didn’t quite turn out as planned. As in, it was supposed to be lavender…

…but it’s definitely pink. It could be because my daughter bought ivory lace, and the slight yellowish cast to the fabric combined with the purple to make pink. I don’t think it’s the dye – in the sink, it looked plenty purple! Or it could just be a fluke.

So we bought another bottle of dye, this time blue, in hopes that redyeing with that will make it lavender.

My ROW80 goals did also not quite go as planned, but I can’t blame it on not knowing what we’re doing, or picking the wrong thing to start with: I simply didn’t get everything done. But it didn’t go badly, either.

Here’s how I did:

Two hours of brainstorming/prewriting my next book – YES!
Fitness activity 5x – partial, I got 4x in
Send out press release for Time’s Enemy – no, although I did send it to a friend with a journalism background to look over; she had some good suggestions, which I made, but did not send it yet.
Assignment for writing workshop – YES!
Collect info for taxes – partial: I calculated my business mileage to write off, and scheduled our appointment with the accountant, but that’s about it. The appointment is for this Saturday, so this WILL be done by then.
Dye lace for prom dress, and cut one of the four fabrics in it – partial: the lace is dyed but needs to be redone; did not get to do any cutting.

On another note, I participated in a panel discussion of romance writers for the Dayton Metro Library on Saturday. We didn’t have a huge turnout, but more people showed up than the three I feared. The program went well, and we all had a lot of fun! So that’s something. 🙂

Perfect Girls

We also have some new releases to celebrate, starting with YA romance from Denise Gwen! I haven’t officially mentioned my own latest release, other than in a Sunday ROW80 update, so here it is! Quick ROW80 update: I have been reading Eat That Frog, by Brian Tracy, on recommendation by Kristen Lamb. It’s full of ways to figure out what’s the best use of one’s time, and to spend the most time where it will have the biggest results in relation to our big goals. I’m working on focusing on one task at a time, and so far, it’s helped: I’ve spend an hour brainstorming my next book, the lace for my daughter’s prom dress is dyed, and I’ve gotten two workouts in. So far, so good!

Elmer Fudd and ROW80

My husband played Elmer Fudd the other day. As in, he went wabbit hunting. Only unlike Elmer, my DH got Bugs Bunny — three of ’em, in fact.

Which meant someone needed to figure out what to do with them. Being the more inclined toward culinary arts of the two of us, my daughter did her best. She found plenty of rabbit recipes on the Internet, but there was just one problem: our friend Google revealed very little in the way of info on how to prepare said rabbit before cooking.

This was a learning experience that gave me new respect for my characters Tony and Violet, who wound up stuck in prehistoric times in Time’s Fugitive. Because even with the benefit of 21st-century tools such as a stove, stainless steel cookware, and utensils, getting the meat off the bones proved to be quite the challenge. As one would expect, rabbit is very lean, and there was a great deal of sinew and brittle bones to deal with to get at the meat.

We ended up going out to dinner that night. (Although I did get a bite of what little there was, and it wasn’t bad at all, sort of a cross between turkey and beef.)

I also learned something about my limits when it comes to ROW80 and my goals: all my good intentions don’t matter if I’m tired, not feeling well, and/or just simply piled too much onto my to-do list. I’ve had one of those weeks where I’ve been tired and headachey all week, so not much has been done. Good thing it’s a new week, and a new chance to meet some more-reasonable goals!

Here’s how I did:

Two hours of brainstorming/prewriting my next book – partial I got maybe 1 hour in
Fitness activity 5x – partial, I got 4x in
One chapter’s exercises in the estate planning guide – I changed this to collect info for taxes; I got some of that done but not all
Be a good ROW80 sponsor and visit all the blogs I’m supposed to at minimum – No – I missed some that were undoubtedly entered later in the day
Write press release for Hangar 18: Legacy – I’m going to consider this one Done, even though I ended up writing it for Time’s Enemy instead; stop by tomorrow to see why!

I had also forgotten that I signed up for an online writing workshop that started Friday, so I have assignments to do for that. I’m also going to take ROW80 sponsor visits off my list, as I’m doing fairly well on those overall. Finally, the best thing about ROW80 is that we can change our goals. I need to do that now, as my daughter wants me to make the prom dress of her dreams. I love to sew, so this gives me the perfect excuse – not bad at all. 🙂 So here are this week’s goals:

Two hours of brainstorming/prewriting my next book
Fitness activity 5x
Send out press release for Time’s Enemy
Assignment for writing workshop (first week’s is easy)
Dye fabric for prom dress, and cut one of the four fabrics in it (The one color the lace didn’t come in, is, of course, the color my daughter wants: lavender. So we’re going to dye it.)

Would you buy a car from this guy?

Yesterday was that great American holiday known as Superbowl Sunday, where the NFL’s top two teams duke it out… AND we get to see the year’s best commercials! I will have to admit I didn’t watch much yesterday–too much else to do, and I didn’t really care who won–but when I do watch. it’s mostly for the commercials!

We have some good–well, depending on how you define “good”–local commercials, too. Take these car commercials for instance. The guy in the commercials is the sales manager for Dayton area dealership group, and whether or not you’re in the market for new car, if you live in Dayton and ever turn on the TV, you’ve seen them–and probably have an opinion on them. Love ’em or hate ’em, they’re certainly memorable!

You see, this guy pops up whenever anyone mentions buying a new car… and in some of the weirdest places! It goes something like this: a husband and wife, or maybe a couple of friends, are talking and one of them mentions something like “yeah, and after this, I need to go shop for a new car.” Then this sales manager guy pops into the middle of everything (and I mean everything!) and says, “Did someone say something about BUYING A CAR??!!”

He has shown up in a ladies’ aerobics class:

…in the middle of a wedding:

…in someone’s hot tub!

…even in the delivery room! O.o

He’s shown up in the ladies’ room at a night club (in a separate stall!). He’s even shown up in bed with a husband and wife! (In the middle!) Everyone was clothed, but… ewww!

In case you’re wondering, I did not buy my Camaro from these guys, but about a year later, they bought the dealership I bought from! When we were thinking about placing an order (this was before production began), my husband said, “I don’t want that guy showing up in my hot tub!” LOL!

ROW80 Wrap-up: The challenge doesn’t officially end until Thursday, but I now blog on Wednesdays, so I’m posting my wrapup here. This week’s goal was to get Times Two, my Saturn Society boxed set, formatted for upload to Smashwords. That’s done, and I went one better – it’s already published there! Look for an announcement when it’s available in other channels.

All in all, this was a very successful ROW80 for me! I finished edits for Hangar 18: Legacy, which is now with my editor, and will release sometime in the next few weeks. I also won NaNoWriMo by writing a completely new book! This one really stretched me creatively – it’s YA, which I never thought I’d write, and contains no speculative elements. Even more surprising, it came in short! But I filled in some holes I’d normally save for revision, hitting the 50,000 word mark for a NaNoWriMo WIN! Finally, I did well with my fitness goals this ROWnd – always a plus!

The next round starts on January 7th, and I’m going to be a sponsor! That means if you’re doing ROW80, I’ll be cheering you on even more!

Cruising through the Holidays

Planning ahead makes all the difference! That’s what I say when people ask me if I’m stressed this holiday season. No, I don’t have all my shopping done, but I feel good about where I am with it – and everything else.

I decorated two weeks ago. The main reason that’s done is because I kept it simple: Christmas tree, mantel decorations, nativity scene. My family doesn’t care about elaborate decorations, as long as we have the basics!

As far as keeping up with writing goes, I managed that by setting smaller goals. This is an area where I’m not always successful–I’m hopeful that means I’ve learned from those times I wasn’t!

Here’s what I accomplished this week:

Hangar 18 – write up front and back matter
Hangar 18 – create full cover for paperback
Physical activity 5x this week – partial – got it in 4x

I’ve already met my ROW80 goals for the overall quarter. In addition to Hangar 18: Legacy, which is now with my editor, I’d like to release Times Two, the ebook-only boxed set of my Saturn Society novels. Since they are all already written and edited, and I already have a cover design, that leaves formatting. It would be great to get this out before Christmas. The ROW is over on Thursday, and check-in day is on Wednesday, so before then, I’d like to accomplish:

Times Two – assemble boxed set and format for Smashwords
Physical activity 5x this week (2-3x by Thursday)

The Best Medicine – In a Surprising Place

Everyone knows that laughter is the best medicine for whatever ails you, and I’m no exception. And the other night, I found it in a surprising place.

I’d been hormonal and cranky that day, and wasn’t really looking for anything other than an excuse to avoid doing work (this was at home, in the evening, so no, not shirking the day job!). I had won a kids’ book in a contest a few weeks earlier, and wanted to read it before I gave it away, mainly because the author is one of my WANA* friends. Curse of the Double Digits is a middle-grade chapter book, targeted toward kids ages 7-11. I’d planned to give it to some friends from high school who have a 7-year old son who likes to read, but that day, I’d learned one of my coworkers’ daughter was turning 10 this weekend – and the book is about a girl celebrating her tenth birthday, when everything that could possibly go wrong, does.

So I sat down to read. I knew the author, Lynn Kelley, is one funny lady, and the book looked cute. I figured it would be amusing and would make me smile. But holy smokes, I was literally laughing out loud from Chapter One! Curse of the Double Digits is about a girl who turns ten on the tenth day of the tenth month. Becky expects it to be magical, and her family has planned what Becky’s sure will be the Best. Birthday party. Ever. for a couple days later. Her whole class is coming, including a boy she really likes. But on her birthday, she realizes her bangs are too long. She doesn’t want her mom to cut them, because Mom always cuts them too short. So she enlists her best friend to help.

Becky’s scissors are too dull to cut hair, so they find her dad’s electric razor. At this point, I could just imagine what would happen, and was already laughing. What did happen was even worse (for Becky) and funnier than what I imagined, and I ended up laughing through the whole thing as poor Becky suffered one mishap after another. But all ended up well, and I was no longer grumpy, that’s for sure!

My daughter is seventeen. I haven’t read a middle-grade children’s book since she was young enough to still want to be read to, so it’s been a while since I read a kids’ book. Boy, am I glad I did!

So next time you’re down in the dumps, consider picking up Curse of the Double Digits, or another kids’ book. Because really, your bad day couldn’t be as bad as Becky’s–and you just might laugh yourself right out of the dumps!

Just Say No… to Stress, and ROW80

Last year around this time, I put up a post on ways I’ve found to deal with all the extra stuff we have to do around the holidays, that can add greatly to our stress level if we aren’t careful. One of those was evaluating which holiday events we really need to attend… and which we can gracefully decline.

My primary decision-making process for this is quite simple: just ask yourself these questions:

If I don’t go, will someone be disappointed or hurt?
Are there people there I care about, who won’t understand why I can’t make it?
If I don’t go, will it adversely impact me (for example, career or business issues)?
Are these people who don’t live nearby, and whom I don’t see at other times of the year?
Do I really want to go? (<- This one is the most important!)

I had to make one of those decisions yesterday… then woke up not feeling well, so that pretty much made the decision for me. I felt well enough to sit at my computer and play games, and the party I had to skip was one where my friends understood.

I also got some work done, including my ROW80 goals for the week! Here are the details:

Hangar 18 – finish type-in – Done!
Hangar 18 – get answers for new/remaining few research questions, and send to editor – Done!
Hangar 18 – put together book info sheet – Done!
Physical activity 5x this week – Done! (Good thing I did it Monday – Friday!)

I’ve already met my ROW80 goals for the overall quarter. But I’m not going to take the next week and a half off. There’s still much to be done, although with the holidays coming and all the extra to-do that entails, I am going for small goals. So for this week, I’d like to:

Hangar 18 – write up front and back matter
Hangar 18 – create full cover (for paperback – ebook/front cover already done)
Physical activity 5x this week

Quick ROW80 Update: I’ve finished the type-in to the latest revisions for Hangar 18: Legacy, have my editor lined up and ready to go, and have emailed my subject matter expert (on the military, not aliens) with a few final questions. He usually gets back to me pretty quickly, so I should get the book to my editor this week. Also, Christmas decorations are up! Shopping’s started, but there’s a good bit more to go. Yikes!

I won! Or did I?

Wednesday night, I hit a milestone: at last, the word count meter in the status bar of WriteWayPro registered 50,123. I was done with my NaNoWriMo novel!

I actually finished the novel a few days earlier, on Sunday night… with a word count of only a little over 46,000. Not enough. But I’d left a bunch of plot holes and dropped subplot threads, which I’d normally tackle in revision. Instead of moving to another project, I decided to tie some of those up, and that got me to 50,123 on Wednesday night.

I was elated! I exported my document to Word, fearing my word count would change, and it did – to 50,006. But that’s still over 50,000, right?

I entered my new wordcount into the NaNoWriMo website, and the “I’m ready to validate my novel” link appeared. I pasted my whole dang book in…

And no winner bar appeared. Instead, the wordcount I’d entered now read 49,926. What???!!

So I went back and added that author’s note, just a short one. Re-exported, and re-entered. This time, I made it over 50,000 words and got my Winner! graphics.

Here’s the details on my ROW80 goals for this past week:

Finish NaNoWriMo novel – Done!
If NaNo novel is less than 50k, write author’s note and/or nonfiction project to add up to 50k – Done!
Physical activity 5x this week – partial – I got it in 4x
Hangar 18 – review and markup Chapters 13 & 14 – Done!

Here are my overall goals for this round:

Format and release OVRWA holiday story anthology – Done and now available!
Revise Hangar 18 – revisions/markup done, corrections typed in through Chapter 10 (of 14)
Keep up with my exercise, five times a week – ongoing
Win NaNoWriMo -Done!

So that means I’ve already met my revised ROW80 goals, how about that??

But I’m not going to take the next two and a half weeks off. There’s still much to be done, although with the holidays coming and all the extra to-do that entails, I am going for small goals. So for this week, I’d like to:

Hangar 18 – finish type-in
Hangar 18 – get answers for new/remaining few research questions, and send to editor
Hangar 18 – put together book info sheet (blurbs of varying lengths, and other details needed for publishing)
Physical activity 5x this week
